EFCC PROBES NIGERIA FOOTBALL ADMINISTRATORS

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday, told a Federal High Court in Abuja that Sani Lulu and three others involved in an offence under the Nigerian law and not under the FIFA law For allegedly defrauding the federal government to the tune of over N1.3 billion naira and $2 million, and as such, should be tried.
The EFCC stated this in a counter motion challenging an application brought before the court by Lulu and three others, Amanze Uchegbulam, Bolaji Ojo-Oba, and Taiwo Ogunjobi, all former officials of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, seeking to quash charges of alleged corruption preferred against them by the commission.
At the resumed hearing of the matter on Thursday, the accused persons through their counsel, Sunday Ameh and Akin Olujinmi, challenged the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the charges, saying that it is only FIFA that has jurisdiction to prosecute them.
They accordingly prayed the court to quash the charges on the ground that the regulating body of NFF is FIFA and that the federal government has no right to legislate over football related matters under the constitution.
Specifically, the defence said the charges levelled against the men bothered on the breach of Criminal Act, EFCC Act, and Public Procurement Act. Noting that since NFF is not being regulated by such Acts, it could not be binding on the accused persons and as such the accused could not have breached the provisions of such law.
But counsel to the EFCC, Titus Ashaolu, opposed the application with a 22- paragraph counter-affidavit praying the court to discountenance the applications of all the defence counsels on a lack of merit. Sressing that in as much FIFA law is not domesticated in Nigeria, the accused will have to be prosecuted under the law of the land.
"Coming to this court and saying they cannot be tried by Nigerian laws, except FIFA, is an aberration," he said.

NFF Agrees To Compensate Iran for Dashed Friendly
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has agreed to compensate the Iran Football team over the last-minute withdrawal from a planned friendly in November.
Iran is said to be demanding a compensation of US$300,000 from Nigeria for pulling out of the match.
Nigeria had called off the 17 Nov. 2010 game at the last minute, reportedly over non-availability of key players.

About six armed gang men have invaded a voter's registration centre in Surulere, area in Lagos, State carting away INEC Direct Data Capture machine and other accessories.
According to an eye witness, Mr. Idris told NAN that the hoodlums shot sporadically before snatching the DDC machine at about 6 p.m. on Sunday at 047 registration centre on Alhaji Otun Street.
"The shooting made people scamper for safety. They grabbed me and asked why I did not run but I could not say anything, so they used a gun to hit me on the face.
ENVOY - NIGERIA-ISRAEL BOOST TIES
Nigeria and Israel have re-strengthened the bilateral ties between the two countries in agriculture, education and culture.
This was unveiled by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) when an Israeli Deputy Head of Mission to Nigeria, Mr George Deek, acclaimed in Abuja yesterday, against the backdrop of the cordial relations between the countries, noted that the private sector played a key role in the various areas.
Speaking with our correspondent, Mr. George emphasized that “You will recall that Lagos State signed an agreement with an Israeli company to establish an agriculture university''
According to him, the agency adopts the “learning-by-doing initiative’’ to impart practical knowledge to trainees, with a view to creating sound foundation.

The envoy said that Israeli journalists have documented the Osogbo Festival and published a magazine on it in Hebrew.
“These are all efforts to expose the Nigerian culture to Israel. We also have an Israeli singer, who is teaching children music under the classic-kids project’’.
While listing other areas of cooperation to include security, the envoy said that Israeli expertise had become relevant to the Nigerian situation, stressing that emerging forms of crime like the Boko Haram phenomenon, kidnapping and bomb blasts were issues “we have been dealing with in Israel’’.
He said that both countries would continue to cooperate to further strengthen their bilateral ties, spanning over many decades.
